Solar Panel Cleaning

Dirty panels can't capture as much light. Surrounded by farmland, panels in Norfolk and Suffolk pick up dust, pollen and bird droppings quickly — a gentle clean helps keep them performing.

Why clean your solar panels?

Rain alone doesn't keep solar panels clean. It tends to wash dirt to the bottom edge of each panel, where it dries into a film and encourages moss and algae to grow along the frame. Bird droppings are even worse: a single dropping can shade a section of a panel. Over time, that build-up can reduce the amount of electricity your system produces.

How we clean solar panels

  • Pure water only. We use purified water, which dries spot-free and leaves no residue — no detergents that could affect the panel coating.
  • Soft brushes. Gentle, purpose-made brushes lift dirt without scratching the glass.
  • Frames and edges. Moss and algae along the lower frames are removed, where build-up is usually worst.
  • Visual check. We'll let you know if we spot anything unusual such as damaged panels or signs of nesting birds underneath.

How often should solar panels be cleaned?

Once or twice a year suits most homes. Panels near farmland, trees or busy roads, or on low-pitched roofs, may benefit from more frequent cleaning. If you're having your roof cleaned or gutters cleared, it makes sense to do the panels at the same visit.

Frequently asked questions

Do you use chemicals on solar panels?

No. Solar panels are cleaned with purified water and soft brushes only, which is gentle on the anti-reflective coating and leaves no residue.

Will cleaning my panels increase output?

Clean panels can capture more light than dirty ones, so if yours are visibly dirty or have droppings on them you'll often see an improvement. How much depends on how dirty they were.

Can you clean ground-mounted and outbuilding panels?

Yes — panels on bungalows, garages, barns and ground-mounted arrays can all be cleaned.
